Keep in mind that if you do a short hop approaching aerial at an opponent as falco, you're doing a hardish read of 'you will be here, and I will get a clean hit in'. you can still do early aerials without the worry of getting shield grabbed, but you'd have to space them better, such as by planning to land behind them. the scenario you are describing sounds like you were both willing to trade hits, in which case an earlier timed aerial would 'hedge' your bets. it would be worse on shield, and you'd be making the prediction that the opponent wouldn't be shielding, such as being stuck in movement (ex fox tries to dash in). You can beat it by choosing to dair earlier in the air.
